Earthbox® Container Gardening System

Want to grow your own vegetables, herbs or flowers, but don't have the yard space? With EarthBox, you can grow plants wherever you want – even if you live in a concrete jungle.

But how exactly does EarthBox work? Let's take a closer look.

What Is An EarthBox?

earth box

EarthBox is a container gardening system that makes growing just about anything on your patio, deck or backyard easy. The system takes the guesswork out of gardening, so you can enjoy fresh vegetables, herbs or flowers even if you're a beginner.

EarthBox is a self-watering planter, and they use special growing media to give you more control over the growing conditions.

Each box is made with BPA-free, food-safe resin that's UV-stabilized so that it will last for years, even in direct sunlight. With 11" depth and 29" width, the EarthBox allows you to grow a wide variety of plants, including:

  • Tomatoes (2 per box)
  • Eggplant (2 per box)
  • Watermelon (4 per box)
  • Artichoke (2 per box)
  • Winter squash (4 per box)
  • Cucumber (4 per box)
  • Broccoli (6 per box)
  • Pepper (6 per box)
  • Zucchini (2 per box)
  • Peas (16 per box)
  • Corn (16 per box)
  • Brussels sprouts (6 per box)
  • And more

You can grow just about anything in an EarthBox, including potatoes and carrots as well. The box is deep enough to grow a wide variety of plants.

And if you just love flowers, you can grow those as well.

How Does the EarthBox System Work?

Earthbox

EarthBox consists of seven different parts that work together to provide optimal growing conditions for plants. The system still uses conventional soil growing, but it's a more controlled environment that ensures plants always have a healthy amount of oxygen, nutrients and water.

Plant Food

EarthBox uses a granular fertilizer with an NPK analysis between 5-15 to provide plants with all of the essential nutrients needed to grow and thrive. Granular fertilizers break down gradually over time, so they provide long-lasting and continual nutrients to your plants.

One application is all it takes to grow happy, healthy plants. You can purchase additional plant food for future plants.

Growing Media

EarthBox uses a peat-based growing media, which helps eliminate soil-borne diseases and provides a high-quality growing environment for your plants. In addition, peat is excellent for aeration and moisture control, so plants get just the right amount of oxygen and water.

EarthBox includes growing media with each kit, and you can purchase additional growing media when needed. This makes it easy to get consistent results with your gardening.

Dolomite

Dolomite provides plants with essential trace minerals while helping maintain healthy pH levels. The blend of calcium and magnesium also helps prevent blossom end rot, which is a common problem with tomatoes and other fruits.

Wicking Chamber and Aeration Screen

To help improve oxygen flow and prevent root rot, EarthBox separates the water reservoir from the growing media with an air pocket. An integrated wicking chamber allows the growing media to draw water from the water reservoir.

Water Reservoir

The built-in water reservoir holds up to 3 gallons of water and allows plants to continually and automatically draw water whenever needed. As a result, you never need to worry about overwatering, and it's easy to determine when your plants require more water.

Mulch Cover

The mulch cover helps eliminate the need for herbicides and pesticides by stopping weeds from transplanting in the first place. The cover also helps protect against rain and drought by keeping nutrients where they belong.

The mulch cover has two sides:

  • A white cover to protect young seedlings from the heat
  • A black side to stimulate growth

The cover will save you precious time because you won't have to weed your garden. And it will help keep plants hydrated throughout the growing season.

Water Fill Tube with Overflow Drain

EarthBox makes it easy to fill the water reservoir using the fill tube. The overflow drain allows excess water to flow out, so you never have to worry about overwatering. Just fill the tube with water, and you're ready to go.

Additionally, you can purchase a staking system, which allows you to grow climbing plants like peas, cucumbers and tomatoes. Caster wheels are also sold separately, which makes it easy to move your EarthBox around. Whether you're planting new seedlings or just need to move the box around to keep it in the sun, caster wheels make your life easier.

How To Use Your EarthBox

With EarthBox, it's easy to start your own vegetable garden box.

Here's how it works:

  • First, place the aeration screen along the bottom of the box.
  • Place the fill tube in the corner.
  • Pack the corners with growing media.
  • Add a layer of growing media across the aeration screen.
  • Spread your packet of dolomite, and mix it in with the growing media.
  • Top it off with another layer of growing media.
  • Create a small trough in the front of the box, and add the fertilizer granules.
  • Add more growing media.
  • Form a mound.
  • Add the mulch cover, and cut X's where you want to add each transplant.
  • Use the fill tube to fill up the water reservoir.
  • Enjoy your harvest!

All it takes is about 10 minutes of work to get your plants ready for growing.
